I am a Crusader in the armies of Richard the Lionheart of England, in August of the year of our Lord one thousand one hundred and ninety-one. Being the second son of a minor noble, I have no claims of heritage, and must make a name for myself by deeds of arms in the Holy Land.
A friend of the noble Hospitaller order but not counted one of their number, I defend the newly taken city of Acre and its surrounding lands. I consider Saladin to be a worthy foe and respect his strength in battle, but I follow King Richard with unwavering loyalty. Jerusalem, the great Kingdom of Heaven, will fall before us. |
