February 2009 Northwatch Missive

To all the Heralds of the Kingdom of Northshield, plus anyone who might be interested in heraldry, from Bronwyn ferch Gwyn ap Rhys, Ægis (Education) Herald of the Northshield College of Arms, go greetings. I recommend myself to you.

As you may know, I am responsible for the creation of the first complete Heralds’ Handbook for our Great Kingdom. The process is slow, as I am choosing the authors and articles as carefully as possible to give you a firm grounding in heraldry, plus a good selection of and more advanced topics as well as the more basic projects. I must warn you, the Kingdom’s senior heralds, including me, as editor, have the right to refuse articles, so, if that happens, don’t feel too badly—I’m hoping that most of what is sent in will be wonderful.

While I am searching the Known World for articles, I would like to have as many as possible from here in the Kingdom as well. To that end, I am encouraging people to propose topics as well as, if you have the knowledge, The deadline for the first draft is February 1, although the manner of publication will give some leeway. As articles are received, edited and put into some sort of reasonable order, it will be published to my section of the Herald’s webspace. In fact, as I am writing this, I am preparing the first several articles for their premiere. They include articles about making heraldic duty garb, efficient conflict research (in draft), a small bibliography (which will be expanded), and articles on consulting about armory, including a 3-shield “drafting sheet”  (names will come later).

I hope that these, as well as the forthcoming articles, will help you in your jobs or in you becoming more acquainting about this interesting, fun and essential part of the SCA experience

In service,

Bronwyn Ægis
