December Missive

Greetings, Northshield!

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven.

No, the website’s still up. What, you think I only do crazy quotes to tell you that the website is down? It’s up.

I have held the office of Kingdom Webminister for quite a while and have begun looking for a replacement. The job can be difficult at times. Like in any technology-related job, it requires some patience and the knowledge that sometimes things move at their own pace. We live in a time where up-to-the-second communication and dissemination of information can happen, which creates an unrealistic expectation for many people. (Just because it *can* happen doesn’t mean that it always *does* happen.) The job of the Kingdom Webminister facilitates that myth and provides a constant source of information regarding all sorts of subjects. Our website is only growing, and it needs someone to guide it. Are you that someone? If you would like to be the new Kingdom Webminister, please contact me (webminister@ northshield.org) and we can discuss it. Here’s the (slightly updated) job description, which has also been updated on the website. The Webminister reports to the Society Webminster and the Crown, and is a member of the Stallari Council (one of the kingdom Great Officers).

This is an administrative (not development) position that oversees/helps the local webministers of the kingdom, maintains the Webminister’s Handbook, and manages the kingdom website (a web-based application) to ensure it meets the needs of the kingdom officers and the populace. To successfully execute this office, the webminister should have reliable high-speed internet access and regular email access; knowledge and use of the various social media forums that Northshield utilizes is a plus. Strong skills in remotely coordinating a volunteer team with diverse skillsets is very necessary. A technical background in web development and data management/ reporting can be useful, but it is not required in this role (based on the availability of skills in the deputy positions). Previous experience maintaining a large website or web-based application is helpful, as is understanding and working with web-hosting services. Special note: Future plans for the site suggest that knowledge of other web tools (such as MySQL and Ruby on Rails) would also be helpful. You’d also inherit some fantastic deputies who do most of the actual code work and can pick up administrative slack.

As always, we’ve made small tweaks to the site in the last few months which most people probably won’t notice. Please remember to create a profile if you don’t have one already, and try searching for content there. It’s a good website, and mostly stable most of the time.

In service,
Abelard

Obligatory message: To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every website, on our server.

A time to be born, a time to crash
A time to grow, a time to crash
A time to die, a time to crash
A time to crash, a time to crash.

Wait, that's not right. Oh, crap. Website's down.

[The website is up.]
